How Barrier Booster Moisturiser was Developed

As more customers feedback that they needed a moisturiser and Jasmine wanting a night cream with more intense anti-aging benefits but yet not too rich to break her out, she started formulating a lightweight moisturiser packed with antioxidants and beneficial plant oils.

To develop the moisturiser, Jasmine wanted to use some plant oils. However, being science-trained, she doesn’t know a lot about natural ingredients. The high performance cosmeceutical ingredients usually have the scientific papers and data to back up the claims. Jasmine then went on to complete a diploma in organic skincare formulation, just so that she has more in depth knowledge of natural ingredients.

After researching on the types of oil that is beneficial for acne-prone skin, Jasmine tested and found an oil blend that didn’t break her out. She then used this blend of oil to formulate Barrier Booster Moisturiser.

After many iterations, Jasmine finalised on a formula that didn’t break her out. She then sent out 3 samples of the same formula, with difference only in the percentage of our proprietary oil blend, to a small group of initial customers who feedback that they needed a moisturiser on top of hydrating serum.

Each customer was to try and let us know their preference out of the 3 samples with different concentrations of the oil. It’s a blinded test, so customers do not know which tube has more or less oil.

When the results came back, there was no winner among the 3. Jasmine realised that everybody has different degree of skin dryness and so having different requirements of percentage of oil. She then decided to choose the one with a lower oil percentage, so that herself representing people with oily/normal breakout-prone skin could use this moisturiser. And launch a pure blend of our proprietary oil as Skinlycious Balancing Facial Oil, so that the dry breakout-prone skin can customise the amount of oil they need.

  1. Cheong (verified buyer)

I add just a tiny pump to my Skinlycious night regime, after noticing some dryness when i sleep with the air-conditioner on overnight. It has helped a lot with the tightness on my cheeks and at the corners of my mouth. (I have combination-sensitive skin with some acne.)

  2. Vanessa L. (verified buyer)

Tried the sample and works really well on my skin. Doesn’t feel as oily as other products which eventually gave me oil spots and pimples.

I like the texture but still do not feel it is sufficient for my face. I feel I need extra boost primarily I do have dry skin

    • Jasmine (store manager)

Hi Karen, you can add on Balancing Facial Oil either by mixing one or two more drops of oil with Barrier Booster Moisturiser and apply together. Otherwise, if your skin is very dry, you can layer on Balancing Facial Oil after Barrier Booster Moisturiser.

  5. Sabrina S. (verified buyer)

Not your typical overly thick moisturiser, love the consistency of this moisturiser!

Skin-identical Lipid Concentrate
(Ceramides + Cholesterol + Fatty Acids)

A blend of skin-identical lipid concentrate that mimics the structure of our natural skin barrier. Naturally found in the outermost layers of skin, Ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids hold skin cells together like glue, reinforcing the skin barrier. By reinforcing skin barrier, hydration increases leading to smooth plump skin and decreases skin sensitivity.

Proprietary Oil Blend
Our proprietary blend of plant oils with natural Vitamin E moisturises without clogging pores, leaving skin soft and supple while boosting skin barrier function. These antioxidants-rich oils are specially selected as they are beneficial for breakout-prone skin.
Cold-pressed Grape Seed Oil and Sunflower Seed Oil – Antioxidants-rich, High in Linoleic acid and low in Oleic acid. Studies have found that breakout-prone skin is low in Linoleic acid and high in Oleic acid, hence these oils assist in balancing breakout-prone skin sebum profile to a more normal sebum profile.
Cold-pressed Jojoba Oil – The antioxidants packed oil is the most similar to our natural skin sebum profile. Moisturises without tipping the skin sebum profile.
Squalane derived from Sugarcane – Naturally found in our skin sebum, Squalane helps to moisturise and balance break-out prone skin.
Tocopherol a.k.a Natural Vitamin E – Moisturising and Soothing, a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight against free radicals.
P.S. This proprietary blend is also sold on its own as Skinlycious Balancing Facial Oil. Customise the amount of oil your skin needs.

Lotus Leaf Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Guava Leaf Extract and Angelica Gigas Extract
A potent blend of plant extracts that is antioxidants and nutrients rich. Improves skin elasticity and firms skin. Purifies and soothes. Study has shown that lotus leaf and green tea leaf extracts works synergistically to balance sebum production.

Pro-Vitamin B5 (Panthenol)
A pre-cursor that is converted to Vitamin B5 when applied onto our skin. Vitamin B5 then binds and holds water in the skin, leaving our skin moisturised, soft, smooth, and more supple. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to restore the function of the skin barrier.

Extracted from sugar beet, Betaine is an osmolyte that helps skin adapt to moisture losses and gains, balancing skin’s hydration. It strengthens skin barrier, softens and smoothens skin.

Saccharide Isomerate
Naturally derived plant extract, saccharide isomerate is a carbohydrate complex, similar to that found in human skin. It creates a moisture barrier on our skin by binding deep within the layers of skin, giving our skin instant and long-lasting hydration for up to 72 hours. Absorption into skin is fast and once absorbed, it cannot be washed away, hence the long-lasting hydration benefits. It helps relieves sensitive skin, strengthen skin barrier, smoothes and plump skin.

Q1. Do I still need to use Hydrating Serum before using Barrier Booster Moisturiser?
A1. Yes. We highly recommend that you use Hydrating Serum as it adds water and holds water in your skin. 64% of skin is water, so hydration is absolutely necessary. Barrier Booster Moisturiser serves to add oil and lock in the hydration.

Q2. Is it a must to use Barrier Booster Moisturiser?
A2. For younger skin below 25, it’s not necessary to use Barrier Booster Moisturiser if you find the Hydrating Serum is moisturising enough for you. For ages above 25, we recommend that you use Barrier Booster Moisturiser to benefit from its antioxidants rich and anti-aging properties. For oily skin, you can use it as a night cream.

Q3. I find that Barrier Booster Moisturiser is not moisturising enough? What should I do?
A3. Mix 1-2 drops of oil with the moisturiser and apply. Otherwise, you can layer on Balancing Facial Oil by applying the pure oil. Our oil layering only recommended for very dry skin or in harsh climates.

Q4. After using Barrier Booster Moisturiser, my face is oily or I noticed my pores are enlarged.
A4. If that’s the case, it means that it’s too oily for you. Everybody has different degrees of dryness and requires different amount of oil. Barrier Booster Moisturiser contains a small percentage of our proprietary oil blend that is beneficial for acne-prone skin. You can try mixing a little bit of Barrier Booster Moisturiser with Hydrating Serum and apply together. Jasmine, our founder, uses about 3 grain size of moisturiser to one full pump of Hydrating Serum.

Q5. How does it help to “Barrier Boost”?
A5. The moisturiser has a blend of skin lipid-identical ingredients like ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. These ingredients hold skin cells together like glue, reinforcing the skin barrier. By reinforcing skin barrier, hydration increases leading to smooth plump skin and decreases skin sensitivity.

Q6. If it contains oil, will it clog up my pores?
A6. These antioxidants-rich oils are specially selected as they are beneficial for breakout-prone skin. These proprietary blend of plant oils with natural Vitamin E moisturizes and doesn’t clog up pores. It helps to balance sebum production.

Q7. I think you misspelled squalene. Am I reading this correctly?
A7. No, we didn’t misspelled squalene. Squalene is found naturally in our skin. But we use squalane derived from sugarcane in our Barrier Booster Moisturiser. Squalane is created by hydrogenation of squalene. Due to the complete saturation of squalane, it cannot oxidise anymore. A study has shown that oxidation of Squalene leads to acne, hence by adding Squalane, less squalene will be produced and in turn helps in reducing acne.
